What is Behavioral Health?

Behavioral health refers to the connection between an individual's behaviors and their overall well-being, encompassing mental health, emotional well-being, and the impact of behaviors such as substance use, coping mechanisms, and lifestyle choices.

Key aspects of behavioral health include:
  • Mental Health: Conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mental health disorders.
  • Substance Use: Prevention and treatment of substance misuse and addiction.
  • Behavioral Interventions: Addressing habits such as stress management, eating patterns, and sleep.
  • Holistic Care: Integrating support for emotional health with physical health to improve overall quality of life.
Behavioral health emphasizes a proactive, whole-person approach, aiming to prevent and manage conditions through therapy, counseling, medication, and community-based support.

In December 2023, the Kane County Board allocated nearly $10 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) federal pandemic recovery funds to KCHD to launch a multi-faceted endeavor to address gaps in the behavioral health system, including coordinating access to treatment and resources to support youth and families.

KCHD allocated these funds to projects, local nonprofits and service providers that tackle urgent community needs, acting as a central hub connecting Kane County residents with the services that support mental wellness.
